San Franciscans waging war against homelessness and public defecation will be asked to add the fight against disposable coffee cups to their to-do list in 2020.
Blue Bottle Coffee and other businesses in Fog City say the battle against climate change necessitates a fundamental shift in mindset moving forward. Patrons will be asked to bring their own coffee mugs into stores and to pay fees if they forget to do so.
“By the end of 2020, all of our US cafes will be zero waste, which according to Zero Waste International Alliance, means at least 90 percent of our waste is diverted from landfill,” Blue Bottle CEO Bryan Meehan said in a recent blog post. “We will test our first zero-single-use-cup program in the San Francisco Bay Area. … You can bring your own cup, or use one of ours. We will provide a beautiful cup that will require a modest deposit, which you can return to the cafe for cleaning.”
Similar policies will be implemented at Boutique Crenn (owned by chef Dominique Crenn of the three-star Michelin restaurant Atelier Crenn), The Associated Press reported Tuesday.
A new design of recycled cups will also be tested by Starbucks in San Francisco, along with four other cities, spokeswoman Noelle Novoa said.
“My three daughters have also helped spark this effort,” Mr. Meehan added. “They, like their whole generation, are angry and concerned about the health of our planet. … They are pushing me to do more at Blue Bottle. It’s not for commerce — it’s for their future.”
The CEO told AP that the policy change will hurt his bottom line.
“We expect to lose some business,” he said in a statement. “We know some of our guests won’t like it — and we’re prepared for that.”
Lawmakers in San Francisco are also mulling legislation that would mandate a fee for disposable cups, AP added.
