Major retailer Ikea has issued a product recall for its Troligtvis travel mug, after tests found that the substance dibutyl phthalate (DBP) could migrate into the product above levels set by the company.
The recall focuses on mugs made in India and urges customers to return the product to any Ikea store for a full refund. The mug has been on sale since October last year.
Phthalates, including DBP, are used as plasticisers to increase the flexibility and durability of plastic.
An Ikea spokesperson told Chemical Watch that the company received test reports "post product release". These showed that levels of DBP were "inconsistent" and some could exceed its 0.3mg/kg migration limit for food contact products, which Ikea set in accordance with the limit of the European Food Safety Authority (Efsa).
The company said it immediately stopped selling the mug and "started thorough investigations and testing to identify the root cause".
"We have tested various date stamp samples and the results are unstable. Most could pass the test but we did find some that failed," the spokesperson said.
It is therefore taking a precautionary approach and applying the recall to all production batches. Ikea said it will share further details when the investigation is complete.
In December last year, Efsa set a group tolerable daily intake (TDI) for four phthalates, including DBP, of 50µg/kg by weight per day.
