These inexpensive travel mugs save the environment while saving you money - SFGate

As much as I'd like to sip a freshly brewed cup of coffee while reading the paper every morning, that requires waking earlier. Normally, I just pour my coffee in a thermos and run out the door, then run back in to grab whatever I forgot, then run back out again. So if I want to enjoy hot coffee, I need a good travel mug. Cue the rest of this article on good travel mugs.

Contigo travel mugs

My editor’s suggestion is Contigo, a brand that has earned his loyalty and has a whole line on sale at Target. He set his down on my desk and announced, “I filled this with coffee at 9:15 and burnt my tongue at 11:30, which is ridiculous.” Take that as a positive.

According to Contigo's website, it would’ve stayed tongue-burn-y (or at least hot) for a total of 10 hours.

Another nice aspect of Contigo’s designs are, well, the design: They come in a bunch of pleasant colors, a fancy marble pattern, and one that says “BUT FIRST, COFFEE,” for anyone who wants to broadcast the fact that they’re a huge dork.

There’s also a 12oz Stainless Steel Wine Tumbler, which is probably my favorite thing they offer. But when it comes to my thermoses, I’ve always used:

Stanley vacuum bottles

Forgoing the fancy designs of Contigo, Stanley offers a few variations on one design: What it calls the “Stanley Classic.” It’s “hammertone” green and stainless steel, maybe with a rugged handle latched to the side. They’re significantly heavier bottles, and inarguably uglier, but they’ll keep your drinks hot for anywhere from 15 hours (in the 160z bottle) to 32 hours (in the 2Qt Bottle).

I haven’t done a timed tongue-burn test for the direct comparison to the Contigo coffee above, but I can definitely attest to Stanley bottles routinely holding heat for far longer than it seems like they should. Also like Contigo, a few models are on sale right now on Amazon:

Stanley does offer a few variations in color and design (for example, you can get the classic bottle with the bold color of matte black), but for the most part, everything is a variation on what you see above. That’s the Stanley experience.

Which thermos is for you boils down to one simple question: What do you want out of a thermos?

If your focus is durability and quality, then either choice is fine. But if you want to save money and maybe end up with an eye-catching design, it’s probably worth checking out Contigo. You’re probably not going to do better than $11 on a real thermos anywhere.

On the other hand, if you want sheer efficiency and your style is “not even having a style, man,” then you probably already know that Stanley is the classic choice among the granola crowd.

No matter what, you’re going to still have hot coffee when lunch rolls around—just try to make sure you don't burn your tongue.
